I’m Mica Kath, the artist behind Aurora Glasswork. I have always loved art of all mediums, but from a young age, I focused primarily on music. After graduating from UCLA with a music education degree, I spent nine years teaching music abroad, both in the Peace Corps and international schools. However, at the age of 32, while teaching in Ukraine, I started experiencing what I later learned were symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy. As my symptoms increased and I was no longer able to teach, I returned to my hometown of Davis, California.
Back at home, by happenstance, I found my way to glass fusing. What I thought was going to be a two-month introductory class quickly became much more as I fell in love with the craft, the studio, and the people I've met along the way. Now, almost five yeas later, glass fulfills my need to create art and allows me to be active on my own schedule. Today, I find joy in my studio while I listen to music.
With glass fusing, I can create pieces that are functional or purely decorative. All my pieces begin as flat sheets, thin strings, or tiny bits of glass. I use a number of techniques and a variety of tools to manipulate the glass into different patterns and shapes. Each piece is kiln fired at least twice and sometimes up to four times, with each firing serving a different purpose.
I make bowls, plates, platters, soap dishes and other functional pieces. But making birds, especially hummingbirds, which symbolize hope and resilience, are most meaningful to me.
I donate a portion of my sales to the Epilepsy Foundation of Northern California.
